On February 4th, President Allen, sent out a new budget message to all members of the UNI community stating that the University is working to address a budget reduction of 9%. He is chairing two new task forces regarding cost containment and revenue enhancement for the university. To immediately reduce costs he has issued the following orders:
- A hiring freeze is in effect. A review by the divisional vice president must be conducted for all vacancies prior to action, with exceptions reported to the president.
- Non-essential out-of-state travel is restricted. A review by the divisional vice president must be conducted for all travel prior to action.
- Temperature will be controlled to 68-70 degrees in the winter and 74-76 degrees in the summer unless health, safety, research needs, or equipment maintenance and usage require otherwise.
- Lighting will be evaluated and reduced where possible without sacrificing safety.
As I opened my email to read this message, it finally struck me how seriously the current economic crisis is going to hit the state of Iowa and the three regent institutions. When Jake and I first made our platform, we had not received this message regarding the cuts that were to come, and I don’t think any of us could have imagined it would get this bad.
Therefore, just like the university, we have decided to evaluate our platform and cut out two of our initiatives that are currently not within the university’s financial capabilities: Funding Student Research and Creating New Majors. Both initiatives were under the Student Life section of our platform and they remain issues that Jake and I feel passionately about. We have promised to be open and honest with the student body, and that is why we are informing you of this change.
Along with the platform change, Jake and I are adjusting our priorities. The number one item on our agenda will be increasing lobbying efforts. It is a necessity that we make our voices heard at the state capitol more than just one time a year. We need new strategies and a strong presence. We need alumni and faculty involvement. This is not just an issue for student government to solve – this is an issue for all students to solve.
Times are tough and we are all going to have to make some sacrifices. However, Jake and I feel that we can and will strive to complete all of our goals that we have put forth. The initiatives we want to put into place are cost effective. Some of them will simply require the click of a button and will not be a financial burden on the university. We have high, but reasonably obtainable goals for this university and if you give us the chance, we look forward to achieving them with you!
